All Little League and Connie Mack players are eligible to try out each Fall for our 8U - 13U travel teams. Travel players are required to also play Little League and Summer Connie Mack. Other tryouts may also be held in the Spring. Typically, there are 7U instructional-only teams in the Summer. Travel age is different from Little League and can be determined by using the age chart below.
There is a $60 travel fee for our 8U - 12U players which is paid when you register for the Spring Season. Families also pay for the Winter Training facility rental, team equipment (baseballs, catchers gear, team bag / buckets, etc), uniforms, umpires ($60-120 per game), tournament fees ($600+ per tournament), and lodging for distant tournaments. These fees vary (~$300 - $1000) for each team depending on the length of Winter Training, number of games played, and cost of tournaments entered.
Our 8U - 12U travel teams are typically comprised of two teams per age group (blue and white). New teams are formed each Fall with tryouts. An additional tryout may also occur in the Spring. No players are guaranteed a spot on a travel team.
Players are STRONGLY encouraged to attend two tryouts
Players MUST attend one tryout to be eligible
Prospective coaches are REQUIRED to evaluate during tryouts. Current managers will evaluate their current age group. One current assistant coach may help facilitate their current age group tryout. All other prospective coaches will evaluate different age groups (no family members trying out).
- Player scores and comments are collected by the Baseball Board and shared with prospective managers and Board members.
- Rosters are selected oldest to youngest. Prospective managers present a roster to the the Baseball Board. The Board engages in discussion with a prospective manager and may request a new roster. This process continues until there's unanimous approval from all Board members.
- Once a roster is approved by the Board, a team will be announced via email to all families who tried out.
Will scores be made available?
No. Outside evaluators provide an objective analysis which is part of what's utilized to build a roster. At younger ages when not much is known about players, scores are almost exclusively utilized. As players grow up and play on Little League, Connie Mack, and Travel teams, more intangible traits are learned (coachability, hustle, team player, baseball IQ, do they learn from failure, and more). These intangibles increasingly become part of the objective and subjective analysis used to build a roster. Roster's are presented to the Baseball Board as well as the rationale for a roster. Five different prospective managers with the same sets of scores and multiple years of working with players may very well come up with five different rosters that they believe will give Deep Run the most competitive team. The reasoning for each of those rosters can be rational and valid. The baseball board engages in discussion with the prospective manager and may request a new roster. This process continues until there's unanimous approval from all Board members.
Teams meet for indoor Winter Training from January - March at a nearby facility. Teams have the option of participating in a Spring league on Fridays and/or Sundays. All teams participate in several Summer tournaments including our own Field Of Dreams Tournament at Deep Run.
Each year Deep Run sends our 12U teams to Cooperstown Dreams Park for a once in a lifetime experience playing against teams from around the world! All teams must fundraise to cover the expenses of this week-long experience. All team fundraising goes towards the players and coaches participating in the 12U Cooperstown Tournament. Families will need to arrange and pay for lodging separately in Cooperstown.
